Justin Kayiranga: From Refugee Camp to University

Justin Kayiranga’s journey is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Justin was born and raised in Kiziba Refugee Camp, Rwanda, after his family fled their home in 1996 due to conflict. As the youngest of eight siblings, he grew up facing the harsh realities of refugee life but always believed that education could change his future.

He recalled starting his education within the camp, completing both primary and secondary school despite the many challenges his family faced. His hard work paid off when World Vision Rwanda sponsored him to attend Advanced Level studies at a boarding school—an opportunity he described as “a turning point” in his life. However, even with this achievement, the thought of university seemed impossible.

“I had no hope of continuing to university because of my refugee status,” he admitted, explaining that his family simply couldn’t afford the tuition.

After finishing his Advanced Level studies, Justin returned to Kiziba and devoted himself to helping younger students. He began coaching primary school children and later took on a volunteer teaching role. “I did it without expecting anything in return,” he said. “I just wanted to help others in my community.” Despite his passion for education, he had little expectation that he would ever make it to university.

Then, an unexpected opportunity arrived. The team from Refugee Youth Changemakers visited Kiziba Refugee Camp and announced a scholarship opportunity for refugees to study at the University of Rwanda and other institutions. Justin applied, though he had little hope of being selected. To his amazement, he was chosen. “It was a moment I will never forget,” he shared, still in disbelief at how his life had changed.

Now studying Biochemistry at the University of Rwanda on a full scholarship, Justin is proof that perseverance can overcome even the toughest circumstances. He is the first in his family to attend university, a milestone that once seemed unimaginable. Reflecting on his journey, he said,

“Education has transformed my life. No matter where you come from or what struggles you face, it has the power to open doors you never imagined.”
